Observance of Cyber Crime Awareness week in Isles A&N Police cautions public about cyber crimes by ATM frauds

As part of the observance of 'Cyber Crime Awareness Week 2016' from March 28 to April 2, 2016 conducted by the A&N Police Department, a media sensitization programme was organized at the A&N Police HQ here this evening. The DIG, A&N Police, Shri S.N.Bundela was the chief guest of the occasion.
Addressing the scribes, the DIG said that Cyber Crime is committed by the perpetrators through the use of Information Technology and tracking of the accused becomes a challenging task due to anonymity and location of the accused. Of the cheating cases, he said, 60% of the cyber crimes committed in A&N Islands are of ATM frauds while the remaining pertains to land cheating cases etc. He urged public to be aware
of such ATM frauds under
which a person posing as agents of Banks seeks ATM Pin, account details of the customers, at times announcing winning of lottery etc by the customer. Such incident should be reported to the Police immediately, he said adding that it is the duty of every individual to help create awareness about cyber crime among the mass, including the grass root population and sensitize them about the various cyber crimes and its preventive measures.
In his welcome address, the SP CID, Shri Atmaram Deshpande said we are living in the era of Information Technology and cyber crime is a global phenomenon. The evolution of IT in cities, towns and rural areas has lead to an increasing number of cyber crimes.
He said and called upon one and all to be aware of such crimes. He said that awareness programmes will be carried out in schools, colleges and Gram Sabhas in all the three districts of A&N Islands involving the PRI for effective reach of cyber crime awareness.
A power point presentation was also made by the SP CID highlighting about cyber crime, its characteristics, types of cyber crimes viz. Internet crimes, email scams in the form of bogus business opportunities, work at home schemes, chain mails, advance fee fraud, goods at discount, winner of lottery, investment opportunities, phishing email, Trojan horse emails, eavesdropping, email bombing and defamatory emails. He also highlighted about cyber crimes committed through financial scams, credit/ ATM Card scams, intellectual property scams, cyber crimes targeting women, social media and instant message, phone calls & SMS frauds etc.
The A&N Police has also advised the general public and students to be cautious about cyber crimes by adhering to the 5 SMART rules when using Internet and mobile. S- Safe: keep safe by being careful and not to give out personal information such as name, email address, phone number, home address, photos or school names, M- Meet: meeting someone through on line contact can be dangerous, A-Accept: accepting email, IM messages or opening files pictures or texts from people you don't know can lead to problems, R-Reliable: information you find on internet may not be true, hence make sure to check information before believing and lastly T- Tell you parents, trusted adult about someone or something that makes you feel uncomfortable or worried or someone being bullied online.
The programme was attended by other senior officers of the Police Department and concluded with the vote of thanks proposed by Dy SP CID, Shri Subodh Kumar Goswami.
